Former Steelers Linebacker and Kaulig Racing Jackman on Why Bristol Feels Familiar:
For one of Kaulig Racing’s pit crew members, Bristol Motor Speedway feels like home. Former NFL linebacker and current Jackman on AJ Allmendinger’s No. 16 Camaro ZL1, Marshall McFadden loves when the NASCAR schedule brings him to Bristol, his favorite track on the circuit.
“Bristol definitely reminds me of the football atmosphere; with the jumbotron and its arena-like setting, it gives me chills every time I go. The best part is the singing of the national anthem and the flyover; that’s the best feeling in the world to me.” – McFadden on why Bristol Motor Speedway is special to him
McFadden played for the Oakland (Las Vegas) Raiders, St. Louis (LA) Rams, and the Pittsburgh Steelers, before retiring from football in 2016. He transitioned into NASCAR the following year when a friend invited him to a pit-crew practice session.
“For me, there’s quite a bit that carries over from football to being a pit crew athlete, like my competitive nature and pedigree. That, along with intuition and athletic IQ helped make for a smooth transition out of one sport and into another. All of those things play a vital part in my role as a jackman. The intangibles allow me to do my part and also know what everyone else on my team is going to do next.” – McFadden on the transition from the NFL to NASCAR

“Bristol is one of the tracks that I’ve maybe gone to one of the most in my whole life, just watching races. I’ve always loved racing there and, you know, the style of racing around Bristol has changed probably three or four times in my career and I still feel really confident every time I go there. I have had some opportunities to win Xfinity Series races there and have run good in the Cup car, just haven’t had the results, but have run up front. I think it’s going be a great track for us and every every chance is a good opportunity for us, especially at Bristol.”

“Bristol hasn’t been one of my best tracks in the past, but we’ve been doing a ton of work on the simulator in preparation. Our race wasn’t great at Darlington, but we showed speed in qualifying, which was a confidence builder for this 10 team. We know we have had the speed to run up front. There’s a lot more positives to take from last week than negatives, so I think we are on the right track.”
